History
The Basilica Cistern is the largest of over 100 ancient cisterns that lie beneath Istanbul. Measuring 138 metres long and 65 metres wide, it is an extraordinary feat of Roman and Byzantine engineering — an underground cathedral of water, where torch-lit columns rise from shallow pools and ghostly fish glide through crystal-clear water.
Culture
Tucked into the north-west corner of the Basilica Cistern, two enormous Medusa heads serve as the bases of two ordinary columns. Carved from marble in the Roman period, they were brought here from an older structure and reused purely as building material when the cistern was raised.
Tips
The Basilica Cistern is busiest in the late morning and early afternoon, when tour groups and cruise passengers tend to arrive together. For the calmest experience, aim for the first hour after opening or the last hour before closing, when the platforms are quiet and the lighting is at its most atmospheric.
